About the Course
The course introduces the three pillars of sustainability but focuses mainly on environmental sustainability. It aims to produce ignited minds who a) acknowledge that natural resources like pure air, water and soil are fundamental to our survival, b) are aware of the prevalent issues of environmental sustainability and b) consider it their responsibility to conserve it for our future generations. It establishes the connection between their daily needs and its dependency on natural reserves. A fascinating world of materials opens up and the journey from mines to end product is explained with examples. The course teaches the principles of sustainability and the important role played by materials research and innovation in achieving circular economy emphasizing on selection of right materials for minimizing energy losses and maximizing material efficiency. The life cycle analysis of a material from raw material sourcing, synthesis, processing, operation, ageing and corrosion, end of life strategy, recycling, regeneration and reuse is discussed with case studies. Goals set internationally, the Indian scenario, geopolitical factors posing challenges, need of decoupling materials consumption and development, our roles and responsibilities are highlighted.
Course Objectives/ Outcomes
CO1: Enhancing efficiency and Life cycle of materials while reducing its carbon footprint to decouple per capita material resource consumption and development
CO2: Classifying materials on the basis of its atomic structure, chemical bonding and properties.
CO3: Selecting best materials and sustainable practices by correlating its properties with its composition, microstructure at different length scales, and design for a particular application
CO4: Applying 4 R’s i.e. reduce, reuse, regenerate and recycle for waste to wealth generation
CO5: Innovating materials, design and manufacturing processes to maximize sustainability
