About the Course
This course will introduce students to issues of inclusion, representation, and participation of women and other minority genders in media, looking at how processes of production and consumption work to create and reinforce stereotypes, while also surveying media interventions aimed at changing the status quo. Using a range of media, from film to streaming content to games and print media, the course will give students the tools to critically analyze and understand how gender operates in and through media.

To introduce students to how media constructs and reinforces gender stereotypes
To sensitise students to the ways in which verbal and visual languages are gendered
To provide students with an understanding of how to create gender-positive representations
On completing the course, students will be able to:
critically analyze how gender operates in media
use language and images in a way that creates positive gender representations
identify negative and toxic gender representations
discuss how media can be both a positive and negative force
