About the Course

This course is basically about understanding materials and systems at the nanoscale, and how the materials and systems behave as the length scale reduces to the nanoscale. The students will gain some fundamental level of understanding and the versatile application of nanomaterials in different fields after taking this course.
1. History of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, the origin of nanotechnology from the
ancient time.
2. Classification of nanomaterials based on dimensions, and size effects related to physics,
chemistry and biology phenomena and principles.
3. Why do nanomaterials show unique behaviour and properties as compared to bulk
counterparts? ( only basic level without any mathematical derivation)
4. Application of nanomaterials – electronic devices, agriculture, cosmetic, home appliances,
biomedical, biological, sensors, chemical industries, food industries, health care and space
( case-based study without more scientific details )
5. Basic concepts of nanodevices, nanosensors, nanocomposites, nano drug delivery,
nanomedicine, nanocapsules, nano reagents etc. ( fundamental level only )
6. Safety handling, hazardous, storage and stability, self-life of nanomaterials with respect to
the storage conditions (humidity, temperature)
7. Impacts on society, current challenges and issues for the commercialization
