The course introduces the idea of welfare to students while highlighting the key points in its evolution from the 1950s to the present decades of the 21st century. The course is divided into four units that comprehensively give an overview of the meaning, regime-types, institutions, strategies and policies of welfare. While focusing on the politics of welfare, the course also provides a glimpse into its changing nature in a globalized world where states are increasingly downsizing social spending and stepping back from programmes of overall well-being. Nevertheless, ‘welfare’ remains a strong idea necessitating states’ strong engagement with it and making its study important in the curriculum of political science.

Course Objectives:

The Course discusses the emergence and development of concept of welfare and welfare state systems, their regime times. It will also evaluate the role of institutions, social policy outcomes, and changing notion of welfare governance and politics in a globalised world.
